Hank Williams - Gospel Keepsakes
By Brian Turpen

When the name of “Hank” is spoken in country music circles, nearly everyone immediately thinks of the legend, Hank Williams Sr. There is absolutely no denying his immortal stature. And when thinking of Hank, the vast majority of the average country music fans will recall his many successful popular tunes. Most may not know or realize the actual importance that gospel music played in both Hank’s life and career. In fact, most scholars would agree that it was gospel music that first sparked Hank’s interest in music.

In the Deep South during Hank’s youth, many were deeply tied to religious lifestyles, with their first music experiences being gospel. That is exactly where Hank’s first taste of music came from. His first and fondest memories were that of a very young boy enthusiastically singing gospel hymns while his mother Lillie played organ at the Mount Olive West Baptist Church. Years later in a rare interview with Jazz journalist Ralph J. Gleason of the San Francisco Chronicle Hank stated, “My earliest memory is sittin’ on that organ stool by her and hollerin’. I must gave been five, six years old and louder’n anybody else.”

Lillie encouraged Hank’s interest in singing. In the midst of the depression, as a single parent, she scraped together a few dollars and for two years straight she sent him to a Gospel shape-note singing school at the Oak Grove Methodist Church in Avant, Alabama.

Black church music also entered his young life too, as he could hear their music from his Georgiana home. Hank is said to have once commented to a boyhood friend while listening to the black church singing, “One day, I’m gonna write songs like that.”

The hymns Hank learned and heard colored his approach to music as nothing else ever would and those experiences would help shape Hank’s musical career. There is little question that Hank developed an early understanding and enthusiasm for gospel music, which was huge part of the background of his earliest days. The old hymns helped to teach him what he would need to know about writing and performing music. The melodies should be simple and the words plain spoken. Hank also learned how to express sincere feelings and to sing them as if salvation rested upon it. He came to appreciate the warm feeling components of a spiritual song. Gospel music would remain with Hank throughout his life.

Hank Williams Goldmine Review

HANK WILLIAMS

The Unreleased Recordings

Time Life (80031-D) (Three CDs)

Young Hank Williams had under two years to live in 1951 when he pre-recorded 72 short radio shows.   With 54 tracks, The Unreleased Recordings is the first installment of their songs in a series that will enthrall Hankoholics like myself.

Along with the hillbilly Shakespeare’s own hits (“Cold Cold Heart,” “I Can’t Help It”), we find plenty of covers he never taped elsewhere (“Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain,” The Weavers’ trad folk hit “On Top Of Old Smoky”) and fervent four-part-harmony gospel with his Drifting Cowboys on guitar, bass, fiddle, and steel guitar.  Don Helm’s teardrop steel notes perfectly fit the aching sincerity of Williams’ vocals.

Somehow he always shone in the studio despite the torments of alcoholism, congenital back problems and a horrible marriage.  An ornery “Mind Your Own Business” verse that wasn’t on the song’s single release portrays him as (no surprise) a battered husband.

These discs delete much of the shows’ between-song talk unlike his 1949 Health & Happiness Shows transcriptions.  But we do hear him joke, “I like this verse,” amid his comically hang-dog “Dear John.”

While his career peaked in 1951 (the golden age of honky-tonk music), off stage his life was so tragic that, though he sang Roy Acuff’s “Thy Burdens Are Greater Than Mine,” his burdens were really greater than most of ours.   And when, turning to gospel,  he sang, “I’ll have a new body.  I’ll have a new life,” it may have been the spina bifida victim’s greatest wish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-long Hank Fan, February 16, 2009
I thought I had everything that Hank Williams recorded, studio recordings, demo's, radio, TV, live, you name it. Imagine my surprise to discover a whole collection of "new" ones. Of course, I had to have it. I knew it would be good, after all it's Hank, but I was absolutely amazed. Hank Williams singing songs that I never imagined that he would ever sing, and some that I had never heard anyone sing. Anyone who is even remotely a fan of Hank Williams should own this set. In these recordings, Hank seems relaxed, and he seems to be genuinely having a good time singing these songs. As I said, this is a must have.

The absolute best of the best, their can't be any higher rating for this box set, I want more. this box set puts the sound of his Mercury-Box set of 10 cd's Commerical recordings to shame. good thing CD's can't be worn out as I would have worn the grooves by now having just 2 weeks having played at least 25 times all 3 cd's!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hank - a" Masterpiece of Music" recorded live in an informal setting - Simply Outstanding!!!, February 12, 2009
A Big Amen to all the other reviewers who gave this a 5 star rating!!!
This is 3 cd's of Hank and the Drifting Cowboys performing live on a radio show, back in 1951. Its informal, you get to hear them talk, and tell stories and joke, and etc. This is a great release, one of the best releases of all-time!!! I would estimate 60 percent or more of this music is pure southern, country Gospel. These recordings reveal Hank in a different "light" than all the previously released recordings. This is a "must-have" for any Hank Williams fan period!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars You've gotta have this..., February 4, 2009

This is an amazing find. These recordings were headed for the dumpster when someone had the wisdom to pull them aside. The recordings are priceless. The recording quality is very good with a natural sound that is lacking on some of the commercial recordings that I have heard. Hearing Hank speak is a real bonus. I love all the cheering at the end of the songs, these guys were having a lot of fun. Hearing Hank sing so many unknown (to me at least) songs gives us an idea what kind of material these guys played on a daily basis. Lot's of gospel songs and some popular tunes too. Hank's version of On Top of Old Smokey is so blue and soulful it doesn't even sound like the same song. This is the best of Hank Williams...you gotta have this.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected treat, January 30, 2009
This is fabulous-- just like getting a new Hank album. His voice is strong. Hank is at the top of his game singing old spirituals and other songs not previously released, as well as some live versions of his classics. A must for any fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Listening, January 24, 2009

Other's have already described the set, so I'll just toss in some minor points. They do sound much better than the previously circulated bootlegs. A lot of work has gone into declicking and such. Also, these are not exact show-by-show copies. Much of the talk has been deleted so it's much more like listening to a new album rather than a radio show. For repeated listenings, this is probably a wise move. When playing the bootleg set, you may quickly tire of hearing the theme song over and over along with the sales pitch for Mother's Best Flour. Eventually, I believe they will also release the recordings in that form, but this version is likely more to the liking of the general public. Also, I believe additional volumes are to follow that are in the same format as this set. So, keep your eye out for Volume 2, etc. Great stuff! Get it now!!
